Reiki Books

Please realize that most of the Reiki books in print are about nontraditional Reiki systems. They contain mostly other healing modalities such as chakras, meridian discussion, color therapy, etc. and very little correct information on the Reiki system. I have made this page so that the buyer can be confident in buying a well written Reiki book.

Besides the few books that I specifically mention, I do not recommend any of my students buying Reiki books. This is simply because I feel that a book can not transmit the Reiki behind the words like a Master can.

If you want to order any of these books, just click on the corresponding book cover image and it will take you directly to amazon.com where you can purchase them. Buying books through this web site generates funds that help support this site.

Book Title Author ISBN
Reiki: A Comprehensive Guide Pamela Miles 1585424749
Notes: Hands down the best Reiki book I have ever read! This is an excellent book for anyone interested in learning more about Reiki or for those who are already practicing. The depth and clarity of the author's understanding and relationship with Reiki is outstanding. Highly recommended!
Early days of Reiki - Memories of Hawayo Takata Compiled by Anneli Twan 0969993110
Notes: One of the few book I recommend all my students to read. Absolutely amazing and inspirational stories which will help to deepen one's relationship to Reiki. This book also contains historical information about the early days of Reiki in Canada. The importance of oral tradition is enlightening in this book. This book is available at: http://www.morningstarproductions.ca/
The Reiki Sourcebook Bronwen & Frans Stiene 1903816556
Notes: The author's have done excellent research into the history and other aspects of the Reiki system. This book distinguishes between traditional and non-traditional information taught in Reiki classes. The author's have even noted the origins of much of the non-traditional Reiki information taught in the world. This book is very densely packed with information. It takes some time to read through it, but it is well worth the effort for those who really want to know as much information about the Reiki system as possible. I recommend this book for Reiki masters and over zealous Reiki 2 practitioners. Thank you Frans and Bronwen for citing your research! :)
Thorson's Principles of Reiki Kajsa Krishni Borang 0-7225-3406-X
Notes: The author's presentation and experience in living Reiki shines through each page. The author, Kajsa Krishni Borang, has been a Reiki Master since 1984 and studied under Wanja Twan - one of Takata's Master students. Even though the history of Reiki presented in this book is not 100% factual, the deeper meanings in the story told when contemplated can shed insight into our own Reiki journey. :)  I do recommend this book to my students for reading.
Reiki Kajsa Krishni Borang 0-0071-0338-7
Notes: This is basically a reprint of the above mentioned book by Kajsa Krishni Borang with pictures added to it. However, I do not think all the original text is in this book. And although the pictures are a nice touch, I would instead recommend the aforementioned book.
Living Reiki: Takata's Teachings Brown, Fran 0-940795108
Notes: I found this book to be very inspirational as a Reiki practitioner! :D The Reiki precepts demonstrated through the stories told. Fran Brown, who is Takata's 7th Master student, shares the stories which Takata told to her. A great biography on Takata's life as well as a good source for some Reiki history. I have recommended this book to my Reiki students who want to learn more about Hawayo Takata.
Reiki: Hawayo Takata's Story Haberly, Helen J. 0-944135-06-4
Notes: A well written biography on Hawayo Takata very similar to the previous mentioned book.
Reiki: A Guide to Your Practice of Reiki Energy Healing Penelope Jewell 0966407202
Notes: An absolutely amazing book on the practice of Reiki! The book speaks from the heart and to the point.
Hand to Hand: The Longest-Practicing Reiki Master Tells His Story. Gray, John Harvey and Lourdes 1401049605 (paperback)
1401049613 (hardcover)
Notes: John Harvey Gray is the longest practicing Reiki master in the U.S.A. This autobiography contains John's and Lourdes's history including how they got involved with Reiki, information about Takata, hand positions with pictures, information on Reiki mastership, the never published before "Grey Book" which is a compilation of how to do Reiki treatments from Takata's diary, and much more. I would say the only thing I do not approve of is the few additions John has made to the system, which he has included in the book (mostly information on chakras). A wonderful book overall from one of Takata's master students.
The Original Reiki Handbook of Dr. Mikao Usui Petter, Frank Arjava 0-914955-57-8
Notes: This book is a translation of the Reiki Ryoho Hikkei - the book that Mikao Usui would pass out to all of his Reiki students. This book is absolutely wonderful and has excellent color photographs of the hand placements described in the Reiki Ryoho Hikkei. This book also contains some of the techniques that Mikao Usui would teach in his Reiki classes.
In the Light of a Distant Star: a spiritual journey bringing the unseen into the seen Twan, Wanja 0-9699931-0-3
Notes: This book tells part of the life story of Wanja Twan and contains some stories of her experiences with Reiki and Hawayo Takata. I really enjoyed it. :)

[Wanja Twan is one of Takata's original 22 masters.]

Virginia Samdahl: Reiki Master Healer Lugenbeel, Barbara 0-915133-04-0 (pbk)
0-915133-03-2 (hardcover?)
Notes: This is a biography on Virginia Samdahl, the first person Hawayo Takata trained as a Reiki master. Virginia wrote a short Reiki 1 manual in the back of this book, which makes this book a real gem. :) Since this book has been out of print for almost 20 years, it is hard to find a copy and it is usually expensive when you can find a copy.

You can try to get a copy of this book by going to Amazon.com or http://www.bookfinder.com
